The History of Power Tools

For those with an interest in history, the beginnings of tools may not on the surface seem like such an illustrious and interesting thing to uncover, but the history of electric tools is actually quite an interesting one.

Since the beginning of time (or at least man’s time on earth), man has strived to create new ways to ease their workload and be more productive at the same time. The Egyptians created hand-powered lathes thousands of years ago which may have been one of the first power tools, even if it wasn’t powered by electric. And the ability to create such impressive pieces of machinery in times we consider to be much less advanced is extremely impressive.

The modern idea of a power tool is one powered by electricity, and therefore its history is much more confined to the modern day. However, it may come as a surprise to some, just how long these electric tools have been around for. As far back as 1886, Bosch were creating automobile parts with electric components, and by 1932 had created the world’s first power drill. Whilst by 1923 we had sliding circular saws care of the DeWalt Company.

By the late 70s we had cordless tools showing their faces, impressive considering the level of modernisation of other industries around the same time.

Ultimately the history of tools itself is not the fascinating part, but more the level of innovation shown at times when other industries were still far behind, proving just how important tools are to us, and how important advancement in them is in all aspects of our lives.
