Swimming Pool Season is coming up. Its time for a lot of us to get our start-up chemicals ordered. To open up our pools, and see how they faired over the winter season. A lot of warmer climate swimming pool owners may be starting right now. Some of us need to wait a little bit longer as it is still to cold. After making sure where you want to place your pool, insuring adequate space around the entire pool, the most important thing to do is to make sure the ground where the pool is to be placed is level. Most of us don’t know how to use or have access to a transom, so you can use an 8ft 2×4 and a level. Make sure the 2×4 is as straight as can be, or it will mess up your measurements.

The bottom structure of the pool has bottom tracks that are joined together by connecting plates. Underneath each plate position and bury a patio block measuring 12″x12″x 1″ thick, making sure block is level with the ground, for stability. Do not bring in dirt to level anything out at this point, because it is best to have the foundation of your pool sit on virgin soil. This type of soil has had time to pack-down and it is what’s needed to ensure your pool doesn’t shift once it is filled with water.

Once you have the rings and plate in place, you can start to construct the walls. As you run the walls around the bottom track, you can install the upper zones to help with wall stability, making sure you install the uprights around the sided of the pool, (if you are installing an oval pool).

Your walls are up and secure, then add the sand in the center. Only use fine sifted sand because if you don’t, you will feel every rock or stone as you walk across your pool, or may run the risk of puncturing your liner. Two inches of sand is required on the floor with six inches along where the floor meets the wall. To make it a lot easier, install quarter inch polypropylene foam mat on the bottom after the sand is in. This is so when it is time to install your Pool Liner, you will not have any problems with footprints in the sand, underneath the liner.

Now that you are finished with the sand, it is time to install the Liner. Drop it in and secure it to the walls. May pools still use the overlap liner which is easy to install. As the name implies, the Pool Liner overlaps the top of the wall and is secured with plastic clips. Then over that you place your pool ledge. Another type is a J beak liner, which has built in hooks on the top edge of the liner. These liner types are characterized by beautiful patterns on the top edge. Either type of Above Ground Pool Liner is fine and works well.

Many people will decide not to have a home inspection performed on the home or property they are buying. They may do this because they want to save the cost of the inspection, $320.00 national average a few years ago. What these people are learning too late is that the home inspection would have saved them money if they had it done before they bought the home.

For many first time home buyers, the purchase of a home is a big expensive commitment. The buyers may be stretched a bit on the available money at the time of purchase. One thing that sometimes gets skipped to save a few bucks is the home inspection. This is an error. The home inspection is part of doing due diligence to protect oneself from making a mistake or buying a home that is not in the condition that the buyer thought it was in.

During the home inspection the home is looked at by an inspector who will provide information as to the condition of the home and the various systems of the home. One area that can cost the new home owners thousands of dollars if not inspected is the heating and cooling system. Furnaces and air conditioners have an expected lifespan and it is important to learn form the home inspector about the age of the systems and if they are functioning as they should be. If the heating or cooling system is not operating as it should then the cost to repair or even the cost to replace the system can be negotiated.

As I do my Columbus Ohio home inspections I often come across older heating and cooling systems that are not operating as they should. Air conditioners should be able to drop the temperature from 14 to 20 below the return air temperature. As the air conditions age they may not function as well. This can be negotiated with the sellers. Also even if the heating and cooling system is operating as designed it may be getting old. A system that is at or beyond the life expectancy of it can still be a negotiating point.

With bank owned properties there may be no negotiating at all. It is still valuable to have the inspection performed because with the inspection information the buyer is better able to determine what the costs to make the home livable will be. Imagine the disappointment to buy a home only to find out late October that the furnace is old, not functioning, and will cost several thousands to replace. It is better to know upfront so as to make an informed buying decision.

A finished basement looks much like the rest of the house. It has basic architectural elements installed over the barebones outline of the space, to enhance its appearance and convenience, such as electrical outlets etc. Unfinished basements usually have exposed concrete facing, support beams, a lack of electrical options. You generally wouldn’t decorate an unfinished basement.

Basement decorating is unique because of the unique architectural obstacles you have to overcome. For example, almost all basements suffer from a lack of natural light. Obviously this is due to the fact that most basements are either completely, or at least mostly, recessed in the ground, which makes it difficult to install windows in their walls. And while there usually is a type of windows, these obscure openings usually have to be placed near the ceiling, and at this angle they aren’t conducive to allowing sunlight anyway, so they are more of an aesthetic feature. So, not having natural light is the obstacle that must be overcome through your choice of basement decorating. So, when decorating, you want to ensure that there is a wealth of artificial lighting in the room.

Your choices are either: overhead fixtures, which are great because they provide the greatest illumination, but some ceilings in basements prove to be too low for this option. Floor lamps, which may take some experimenting with to eliminate weird shadows; table lamps, which can be a fun decorating element; or another thing you can do is place mirrors opposite existing windows, because this will often multiply the amount of sunlight you can transmit through the room.

Another obstacle that is common to many basements is the stale feeling, both in the air and through a the psychological feeling of being confined in the subterranean space. Your basement is supposed to be a fun and enjoyable space where you can gather, play games, and spend time relaxing. This close, stagnant feeling has the potential to ruin your basement by producing feelings of lethargy or depression, and creating health problems from the un-circulated air. Overcome this problem through basement decorating, as well as with a good ventilation system that keeps air flowing through the space. You can also use plants in your design, or an aquarium to put a peaceful natural feel. The use of natural materials such as wood or stone can also artificially evoke the essence of the natural and make the space more pleasant.

Try to avoid dark colors as the room will already feel darker, and should be decorated to give it a more uplifting and lighter feel. Basement decorating obstacles can be overcome with a little creativity. Use your imagination, and have fun with the space. Do not focus on the limitations, just use your design and decoration to overcome such problems. Add light to the room by installing tract lighting over artwork, or underneath cabinets etc. Do not put over-stuffed furniture in the basement if the ceilings are low. This will increase the feeling of being cramped, rather use items that sit lower to the ground, and are well proportioned to the room size. This will allow you to achieve the feel of more space than you actually have. However, do not leave the room too sparse of furniture or it will be uninviting.

The doghouse that I built was a weekend project I did in early March. I was able to get this adventure accomplished on schedule and within my budget due to some excellent plans that I was able to get my hands on and some borrowed tools. Dog kennel building is one of the easier woodworking projects to do without hiring a professional but you need to have a good set of blue prints. Once this is accomplished, it will also be great for your self esteem and you can move on to other woodworking projects such as building a shed or a deck! It is always nice to brag about something you built from nothing I have found!

There are a vast number of plans for building a dog house some of which are free and some that are not. Depending on what you choose, you must ensure that the plans are detailed and provide step by step instructions as well as photos. You must also get a set of plans that not only list all the materials that you shall need for the project but that also discusses what size to cut all the wood pieces. You want to make sure that all bases are covered and that you get the project accomplished on your first try. You do not want to have an unfinished project to eat at you and remind you that you still have not accomplished your goal on a daily basis.

It is always good to remember your dog’s habits (especially bad habits!) as you build the dog kennel. If the dog chews on certain areas, though it is a nuisance, you will need to repaint the areas before moisture is drawn in which will do serious damage to the wood.

It is also crucial to know that the larger you build the dog kennel, the harder it will be to keep it warm with the dog’s body heat. You might think that giving your pet a roomy structure to walk around in is a good thing but those open spaces will not be comfortable at all for him on a cold night.

Remember that the first step is to get your hands on a good set of plans preferably drawn up by a professional to save you time and money as well as headaches so that you can get the project accomplished from start to finish in a weekend as I did.
