Lighting a Large Room

By On June 29th, 2009

Of course windows go a long way towards bringing light into a room, but when your natural light is limited you can brighten up a room in so many other ways as well. Wall color and accent colors can add to the illusion of a lighter, brighter space, and well-placed lighting fixtures can really increase the brightness factor in any room.

Helping Mother Nature

Start with your natural lighting. Make sure that your windows are clean and dress them with fabrics that do not obstruct the light. Light colored fabrics and sheers work well. Hanging mirrors on the wall opposite a window helps amplify the natural light that is already coming into the room.

To light the entire room, track lighting and recessed lighting are sensible options. Track lighting can light an entire space or be directed at a specific area of the room, whereas recessed lighting is installed flush on the ceiling, providing an even layer of light throughout the room. For the most natural light effect choose soft, white incandescent light bulbs in your fixtures.

An effective way to brighten a room either subtly or dramatically is to bounce light off of the ceiling. To do this you can use wall sconces, light fixtures hidden in crown molding or even tall lamps. Lamps also are great for providing task lighting for reading or working.

Brighten with Color

By painting your walls in pale colors like neutrals or pastels, you allow the light to bounce off of the walls making the room appear brighter. By keeping wallpaper patterns simple and floor coverings on the lighter side, you increase the amount of light moving around the room.

This neutral backdrop also gives you an ideal opportunity to decorate your room. Darker woods and fabrics will really stand out as they contrast the pale colors of the walls and floor, and in turn they make the room seem even brighter.

Accessories Can Brighten any Room

Adding shiny materials into the room through your accents and accessories will go a long way towards keeping the room feeling light and airy. By incorporating furniture with highly polished surfaces like glass or metal tables the room will feel light and full of movement as light bounces from the walls to the furniture to the mirrors to the ceiling to the floor and back to the walls. Adding silver and crystal accessories will further enhance the light energy in the room.

Reflective tiles around a fireplace help brighten the focal point of a room. Mirrored surfaces can also be strategically placed beside light sources to reflect brightness back into the room.

Then choose some of your favorite artwork or a brightly patterned area rug, and pull an accent color or two from them to use in your pillows, vases, lamps and centerpieces. Adding plants and flowers to a space can also help add brightness to any room.

Top 10 Holiday Home Decorating Mistakes

By On June 26th, 2009

Holiday home decorating is a great way for people to show their holiday spirit. However it is important to keep some general principals in mind when selecting your seasonal home decor. The list that follows is a general guide on what not to do when selecting your holiday home decorations.

Don’t Over Do It:

Pick a color scheme and stick to it. Many people make the mistake of being too “loud” with their decorating colors and end up with a chaotic mess instead of a calming holiday effect. Of course, when there are children involved, there are more knick-knacks and decorations that won’t exactly fit in, but that’s the fun of youth. However, for adults who want to pull a seasonal room together, carefully think what holiday home decorating you really need and if those items gel harmoniously.

Keep Decorations Balanced in the Home:

Again, when placing seasonal decorations such as the tree, wreaths, centerpieces, and religious icons around the interior and exterior of your home, keep a tasteful balance. Many light up the night sky with far too many lights around windows, around porches, and sometimes on the roof. Make a more prudent choice and go with a more minimalist approach. Plan out where fairy lights and the tree will go in relation to the picture window neighbors can see through. Keep a close eye on the distance put between items on mantles and table. You never want to create a more chaotic look which makes any room feel less comfortable to occupy. That’s not what you want for those who visit your home.

Keep Inflatable Ornaments Out of Your Yard:

If there are children in the home who fall in love with a Frosty the Snowman snow globe the size of your home, perhaps it’s nice to appease them. However, make sure that the ornament is securely attached to the ground due to high winter winds or an unexpected storm.

If you do not have children, the wise choice to maintain a sophisticated look is to avoid these type ornaments like the plague. It draws away completely from any tasteful decorating you may have hung. No one is looking at the handmade wreath you spent hours putting together. Neighbors see only the Santa and reindeer that are perpetually inflated by a loud generator will make all your creativity moot.

Choose Lights and Related Illuminates Carefully:

Not only does this apply to the lights on your tree matching those on the porch outside, this includes such items as a string of icicles across your roof or around a column. These icicles could be light up, or reflect that the light. It’s not a bad idea to have a tree outdoors, again have a theme going with the lights you use.

Never Half-Finish a Job:

Even though life can be fast-paced, especially those with children, have a million different events to prepare for as well as attend. When you choose to decorate, perhaps have grandparent look after children, or if business keeps you away, schedule one, free day to devote to decorating. This can make sure everything is done in-whole, and all the stress of getting it done is behind you.

Don’t Hide Your Christmas Tree:

Many make the Christmas tree the focal point of all interior decorations. Don’t hide this prized-decorating item in a corner, but in front of a window which adds cheer to those who drive by.

Avoid Using Candles:

There are many, tasteful, natural-looking alternatives sold in decorating stores to prevent one from using candles at all. When decorating a home, many candles were lit and placed on windowsills. This proved to create many house fires due to the heat igniting holiday cloth window treatments.

Carefully Choose the Wreath for Your Front Door:

When looking at the exterior of the home, many eyes are drawn first to the wreath adorning your front door. There are a plethora of fun, adventurous, or traditional looks to meet any personality. However, be mindful of how this wreath corresponds with the other decorations.

Pick the Right Time to Put Up or Take Down Decorations:

It seems that Christmas decorations go up earlier and earlier every year. Where many didn’t break out the tinsel until the first week of December, however, during current years, many Christmas trees go up before Thanksgiving.

Likewise, there are a few who don’t seem to want to let go of Christmas, let those lights keep blinking well into January. Think before you put up decorations and remove those decorations no later than New Year’s Day. This marks the time of a new year, and another time to put the last holidays behind us.

Avoid Mixing Religious Icons:

The basic problem here is that the mixing of religious icons can be seen as disrespectful to some of varying faiths who visit your home. It can also project the idea that you have a scant knowledge of religious traditions and prove embarrassment.

Outside Lighting Fixtures

By On June 22nd, 2009

There are many types of lighting fixtures that you can use outdoors. Many of them that are often most commonly found are the type that run on regular wired electricity. There are more and more that look like these common everyday types that now can run on solar power, but look like the older easier to find wired types. The best types of lighting to use for outside lighting are going to be sealed against the elements, even down to their wiring or electrical parts.

Using any type that is not suited for outdoor use outdoors is unsafe and dangerous. Finding the right outside lighting fixtures will usually involve some shopping either in the walk in stores, or browsing first extensively online to find your best possible choices in the styles and types that you think would suit you and your budget best. When looking for lighting fixtures be sure that you have a type suited for outdoor use. You can get a lamp post with several globes or various shapes, styles, and sizes, you can also get outdoor wall sconces that can be mounted to your home or other outside buildings, or even pillars at your entrance gate or garage.

These lights can often be controlled by a switch inside where you can turn them on or off, or they can be a dusk to dawn light that is mounted, or a light on a lamp post or pole. If you are not sure what will suit you home and yard best, speak to a lighting specialist, or get more information by selecting the links on this page for more help, or choices. One thing to remember, if you have several lighting fixtures that you want installed in your yard, you will want some power ran to them from your breaker box to give them power. Another option is using solar powered outside lighting fixtures.

Look at lighting books, magazines, catalogs, or any pamphlets that you can get your hands on in the lighting stores. Ask for a demonstration, or a tour if it is a large store. Some lighting stores have specialists on hand that may also arrange to have these fixtures delivered and installed by a professional. These services are also for additional charges. Click on these page links for more information and help in choosing the best outside lighting fixtures for your home.

Craftsman House Plans – Family, Simplicity and Elegance

By On June 19th, 2009

1.    How did craftsman house plans become popular?

During the overlapping periods of the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian era, the upper-class tended to build large opulent homes, often made from mass produced materials. The common folk, be they laborers, farmers, or other professionals, lived in simpler, hand-built homes, using natural materials and their own skilled hands to build their abode.

These aspects of society   both the using of mass-produced materials for the construction, as well as the large, over-done home design, was symbolic of that periods disregard for the common working man. This disregard is expressed by the fact that the upper-class used construction materials that might have been made by the common worker, who probably had worked under slave-like conditions to produce those materials. Instead of boycotting the companies that produced the materials, and force them to treat their workers better, the upper-class turned a blind eye and ignored the plight of the laborers.

The actual design of these Victorian style homes clearly indicated a master/servant relationship. The kitchen, for example, was completely closed from the rest of the house; the family hardly entered it, with the servants the only ones to use it during the preparation of all the meals. As a result, these kitchens, aside from being closed to the rest of the house, also lacked an area for the family to eat, as they never would eat there anyway.

As a result of all this, both in England and the USA, people starting building homes with cleaner lines, using only natural materials that had been made, often by hand, by a local artisan. This probably resulted in better terms and payments for the home builder, as he could charge more for his work as it was unique, and he could work under better conditions.

Additionally, the middle-class, who could not afford servants or live-in help, began to design their homes differently. The mother was often responsible for all the cooking, cleaning and child-care. As such, she needed a kitchen that was open to the rest of the house, allowing her to see what her kids were doing at all times.

She also needed a place for the family to eat in the kitchen, as that was where she spent a considerable amount of time, and feeding the family in the kitchen was much more convenient.

The result of all this, is what became known as craftsman house plans.

2.    What are some of the features found in craftsman house plans?

Overall, craftsman home plans incorporate simplicity and functionality into the home design. The use of natural or crafted materials, such as wood, stone, or glass is quite common in craftsman house plans.

Specifically, some architectural aspects include things like low-pitched roof lines, gabled or hipped roofs, deeply overhanging eaves, exposed rafters, and the front porch beneath an extension of the main roof.

3.    Can craftsman house plans be environmentally friendly?

The whole philosophy of craftsman house plans is based on societal awareness. This goes hand-in-hand with the current green revolution. Craftsman house plans can easily incorporate many green features.

Decorating With Bamboo – The Latest Thing in Home Decor

By On June 16th, 2009

Bamboo is enjoying a much-deserved resurgence in popularity and this can be attributed to a few different reasons. Bamboo’s applications are versatile, attractive and environmentally friendly. Using bamboo is a great way to bring a touch of Asia into your home without spending a small fortune.

Bamboo is Versatile
Contrary to popular misconception, bamboo is not really a variety of wood; it is a type of grass. While bamboo flooring looks like any wooden flooring, the many different species of bamboo imparts every floor with its own unique look. In addition to looking fabulous bamboo is also very durable when taken care of properly. Unlike wood, bamboo is resistant to insect infestation and is not as vulnerable to moisture too.

Furniture is usually the first to come to mind when talking about decorating with bamboo and there is an endless assortment of bamboo furniture to choose from- bedroom sets, chairs, sofas, lawn furniture… Bamboo can also be dyed to any color imaginable and used to make baskets, mirrors, lamps, screens and wallpaper as well as a wide variety of fabric. .. Curtains, throws, sofa covers, area rugs and even window blinds can be made of bamboo.

Bamboo is Attractive
A little bamboo can lend an Asian feel to your home. Asian design is popular for its simplicity and sophistication. Screens that are made of bamboo can be painted with a distinctive Asian scene or with Japanese symbols representing particular qualities that are valued by the family. Not only is this attractive but it also personalizes your home decorating and gives it a distinctive touch.

The ability to bleach and dye bamboo means home decorators are not held to just one color scheme. It is beautiful in its natural state, but the ability to make bamboo any shade you like makes it even easier to match it with the rest of your décor. It is especially suited for homeowners who wish to go for a tropical feel in their home decorating.

Bamboo is Environmentally Friendly
The “green” consciousness is spreading. People are looking for every possible way to do their part in preserving and healing the environment. Cutting bamboo is not the same as cutting down trees because while trees take decades to grow back and must be replanted before they can do so, cutting down bamboo promotes regrowth.

Bamboo is biodegradable, too. When tossed aside or left alone, it will return to the earth from which it sprung. With all the plastics we use in our lives today – even for building materials – we can certainly use a material that is not only durable and more resistant to climate changes than wood but one that breaks down instead of polluting our world.

There are several reasons for decorating with bamboo and several ways in which to do it. From flooring to cabinetry; from blinds to area rugs, bamboo is the perfect choice for all your decorating needs.

Interior Design Software

By On June 13th, 2009

Interior design is not an easy task by any means and requires some serious thought about an abundance of factors that come along with it. It is even possible to argue that you need someone with some experience and a very keen eye to detail. With style, design, DIY and much more playing a large part in a lot of homeowners plans it is becoming more and more important to get this right. There is even more importance played on this due to the amount of home DIY television shows out there.

Fear not there are a number of resources out there to help you plan and design your home. Bear in mind at this point that all these television shows don’t just go round guessing at what to do with a home interior project, careful planning and strategy is created over a lengthy time. A number of resources are used and in most cases for television shows they are at extortionate prices.

Many interior designers have a lot of tools in their arsenal from major contacts within the industry to simple yet effective tools to plan out a whole interior design project. My main focus today will be on interior design software, a tool that any one of us could buy and use for our own DIY projects. There are so many options out there that are available to the masses that we really need to think about our needs and ability. It would be a big mistake to just go ahead and buy any software without doing your research and this is purely based on the cost factor involved with software.

First off you need to consider the usability of the software and the features available to you. Do not take this lightly as I can only assume you will be spending a serious amount of money on your interior design project. Some features that are really useful are:

• Different camera angles
• Ability to experiment with the lighting
• Ability to output dimensional diagrams
• 3D line drawing

If possible try and get yourself some trials of prospective software and literally trial them out and make sure you are able to use it with ease. The design, layout and navigation of the software should be intuitive and not make you think too much. Know what features are available to you and practice on designing a small room in your house. Most importantly ensure there are a lot of asset libraries available for you to work with.

Once you are ready with your software, remember Rome was not built in one day. This will take time and you really need to sit down and generate ideas from experts, friends, television shows, magazines and anywhere else you can think. In fact the online world might be an excellent place to start. Look at colour options, furniture dimensions and the room capabilities and ensure every potential detail is looked at. Don’t just settle on one design, plan plan and plan, show it to your friends and family and get their opinions on your work.

House Plans Described

By On June 9th, 2009

The kind of house you live in can also define who you are as a person, in the sense that it can give other people an idea of your personal preferences, your lifestyle, etc. If your residence is unique, more often than not, others may view you the same way. By having house plans that suit you and your family well, you will not only be able to create something distinct, but also add personal touches and have ensured comfort in your property.

If it is your first time in house-building, you may realize that things are not really that easy. There are so many options available and a lot of judgments to make that you may not even know what hit you. The very first thing that you have to decide on is how you really want your abode to look in both its exteriors and interiors. Learning about the different accommodation styles available may help make the process easier for you.

One style is what the experts refer to as ‘colonial’. It is very attractive and more often than not will give not only you but other people as well, an esteemed impression. If you want an extremely polished look and if you have an elevated lifestyle, this will be an excellent choice. The said type is also meant for big families or even those small in number but would like a place that is airy, because of the space it offers.

For people who are country lovers at heart, the cottage form will definitely be a good match. It will make you feel closer to nature especially because of the majority of the materials used in building it. The said edifice is also very cozy. It may be on the ‘cute’ side but people who live in it will feel the ultimate comfort and may even be envied by most of their neighbors even if this specific structure is unusual in big cities. If you want a romantic setting e.g. curling up with your loved one by the warm fireplace, then this is the one for you.

Those who may want to go with the flow may be more interested in a single level ranch that has a terrace. You and your neighbors, friends, etc. will surely have a wonderful time chatting and bonding together on your front porch. Your habitat may be common, but, because of its patio, your address will surely be popular within your neighborhood, especially if those within your street do not have porches.

There may be an assortment of house plans but the most special proposition will be that solitary piece that matches your family’s personality and of course, the budget that you have. It is also a must that you feel at peace and contented inside your finished quarters. Though it may be true that you can simply hire an engineer or an architect to give you suggestions—nothing will still take the place of you being able to make an informed decision.

Bathroom Suites: Tips for Bath Selection, Colors and Decor

By On June 6th, 2009

Many homeowners are opting to remodel their homes instead of buying or building a new one. One of the main rooms chosen to get a new look is the bathroom. Bathroom suites and decor can be changed out to create a brand new look and feel without spending a fortune. Remodeling your bathroom will not only improve the overall quality of living in your home, but will also boost your home’s value. Here are some tips for choosing a new bathroom suite along with gorgeous colors and decor to match.

Looks or Practicality

Do you want a fancy bath with lots of decor perks or a practical bath that makes grooming and bathing much easier in the mornings? This is the first question to ask when viewing various bathroom suites. There are hundreds of styles to choose from, and some are more practical than others. It’s really great when you find a bath suite with both qualities!

Shopping at an online bath store can help you find all the desired features without interrupting your usual morning routine. Go for traditional styles in various colors and shapes, or the newer styles such as the 1700 mm L-shaped bath. If it’s relaxation you’re after, look for Jacuzzi baths, or jet baths such as the Dee Bow Fronted 24 Jet Bath or the Corsica Bow Fronted 24 Jet Bath. The Modena 22 Jet Whirlpool-Airpool Bath can really help you ease those muscles after a long day at work. These can be installed in conjunction with a quadrant shower so you can choose between shower and bath any time.

Toilets and vanities can also be chosen on the same merits – quality, comfort and usability. If you need plenty of bath supply storage, opt for a vanity with cabinets and drawers. If you want to keep the bath simple for houseguests, choose a small vanity design such as pedestal vanity. And remember, these come in many shapes and sizes. You can complement the tub or shower and vanity with stainless steel mixer taps and shower valves. The designs are endless if you shop at an online bath store so you can easily find the bath suite that’s right for you.

Here are some bath suite styles to compare when searching for designs online: Imperial bathrooms, Burlington, Designer, Modern, Shower Bath Suites, Traditional, Console, Impulse, Shower Suites, TC bathrooms, and Traditional English. You can also compare by manufacturer. Here are some popular companies: RAK, Lecico, Balterley, Ideal, Roca, Frontline, Scorpion, and Qualceram.

Choosing Colors and Other Bath Decor Items

Once you’ve chosen a bathroom suite, use some creativity in selecting color and designs. Do you want florals, stripes, plain or unusual patterns? What type of mood do you wish to set? Dark or bright colors create a cheery atmosphere while soft colors bring about a relaxed mood. Many homeowners choose the cheerful designs and colors for their guest bath and more relaxing colors for their own personal bath. Consider options for flooring and walls carefully, as these will be difficult to change later!

You can add complementary decor items and features to your bath to spruce it up. For extra warmth, consider under-floor heating and towel warmers. Add matching window coverings to blend with your shower curtain, floor mats, towel racks, etc. Choose lighting and fans to taste, and be sure to decorate the walls with sconces, paintings, a lovely mirror and perhaps floral pieces.

With the right combination, you can create the bath of your dreams. Keep in mind that you will have to live with the bathroom suite you choose for quite a while. So don’t go too far out…find one that you and your family will be pleased with for the long run!
