Simple Interior Design Tips

By On March 30th, 2009

A modern home owner today enjoys a lot of freedom when it comes to how they design the interiors of their homes. The philosophy of design is very much in-sync with a postmodern world view where rules and regulations are thrown out the window in favor of an almost anything-goes approach. But beware: even in chaos you will find order.

Before you begin ask yourself two questions:

1. What do I want to improve?

2. What is my interior design budget?

Your interior design options can range from small to large and from inexpensive to very expensive.

You may be able to solve the problem of your lounge room with a splash of colorful pillows and a strategically hung mirror or you may need something more drastic like a complete change of wall color with a feature wall to boot.

The important thing is to be able to pinpoint exactly what is not working for you now. Is it really the color of your walls? Or would a framed poster and showcase light fighting do the trick? Is it really your drab furniture? Or would a brightly colored throw rug and pillows make the dramatic change you are looking for?

In order to answer these questions you need to step into your room and imagine you are expecting a new friend to visit. What would this person see? How would you feel you could better impress this person? Then always try to answer your ideas with the smallest possible changes first rather than the most drastic.

Color is one of the best ways to create the illusion you want. Adding color to your interior design need not be drastic (as in wall painting or new furniture) but easy and something you can do in a day. Instead of painting a wall, hang a mirror, clock, shelves or piece of artwork. Instead of buying a new coffee table, decorate your existing one with books, candles and a large bouquet of freshly cut flowers.

The most important rule of successful interior design is the rule of simplicity.

Interior Decorating Ideas With a Coastal Theme

By On March 27th, 2009

The temperature is sizzling and what better time to bring the cool beach breeze into your home décor. If you love the beach but can’t get there as often as you like, then bring the beach to your own home.

What color do you think of when you think of the beach? If you said blue, you are right. Blue is the color of the deep ocean, blue is the color of the perfect sky and blue is a color that will make you feel cool regardless of the temperature. Consider painting this beachy color on your living room, bedroom or bathroom walls. Colors that will work well are, Ebb tide, Open Seas and Vast Sky, by Sherwin Williams, the names alone will tell you what inspires them.

Cool down your home this summer with shades and textures that create a vista of calm. Feel as though you are on vacation all year long. You don’t have to pack your bags and drive several hundred miles to reach your vacation spot, simply create it in your own home with simple, easy and affordable quick changes. You will be surprised what you can accomplish in a weekend.

Changing out your fabrics will evoke a day at the beach. Consider slip covering your sofa and chairs in a sandy beige. Toss in some throw pillows in a fabric with a shell motif.

Nothing looks fresher in the summer than a light fabric at the windows. Choose a white or sandy beige fabric. Tab top panels also work well, many will have a button at the tab, consider gluing a shell on top of the button. The result is quite fresh and very easy to do. Shells can be found at most craft stores or simply stroll down the beach if you are lucky enough to live by the sea. Strands of small shells can also be used to create a valance effect on a simple panel. The result is the unexpected.

Switch out your art for oceanscapes or fish motif prints. Create your own wall décor with large star fish, ceramic fish and large shells.

Create an inexpensive coffee table. Purchase two large garden urns, fill with sand, place shells in the sand and top with a piece of glass. This is a very fast and affordable answer for a very unique look.

Going on vacation to the beach is a very relaxing getaway, but vacations come to an end, so why not create that vacation feeling everyday in your own home. Our homes are the place where we should be able to find peace and solace. I invite you to create that place in your own home.

High Ceiling? – Go For Lighting Pendants

By On March 23rd, 2009

When you hear this name, the first thing that strike your mind is something related to jewelry. Obviously its name is like that. But there is nothing related to jewelry. Pendent lighting is a form of lamp which is actually suspended from ceiling. These types of lamps are perfect for kitchens islands, desks, breakfast nooks and the like. You can opt for single pendant lighting or two to four in group. These are attached to one another using a rod. It opens up space for new creative designs and ideas.

For better lighting it is recommended that you should mount the pendant lighting fixtures around the height of 24″ to 30″ above floor. If you are using mini pendants, the height should be around 18″ to 24″ above the surface that you want to light up. If you are using a group of pendants, adjustable bars are used to mount it so that you can change the position of lamps to change the light intensity at different places.

There are five different types of pendant available: Inverted, downlights, mini pendants, kitchen and island pendant lighting and pool table and billiard lights. Just have a look at the description.

The face of the inverted pendant fixtures is bent towards the ceiling. This feature protects the surrounding area from direct glare of light. By reducing this glare inverted pendants are used for making a relaxed and soothing environment. But inverted lamps are not suitable if you want to use it for reading or any other task.

Downlight pendants are used in Reading areas, game tables, pool tables, and places where a particular task needs to be illuminated. It is direct light on the task to illuminate it and give a proper and clear view.

Mini pendants are used in small areas. It has a single bulb of 40-60 watts. It can be used as an additional light on a particular task with already illuminating light. You can also use mini pendants to decorate rooms by hanging three to four mini pendants.

Pool table and billiard lights are just like downlight. But there is one difference. Pool table lights and billiard lights give constant illumination. It is available in different type of material like stained wood, brass, wrought iron, smoked glass, and other materials. You can get it anywhere from twenty dollars to hundreds and thousands of dollars depending on the variety of the material.

Pendant lights only are sufficient to prepare a relaxing environment but are not sufficient to illuminate a whole space. To do it you have to make a paring with table lamps, wall sconces and other light sources. This will make your room beautiful and eliminates dark spots. Pendant lighting is useful for all purposes.

Basic House Plans

By On March 20th, 2009

The basic house plan is the layout of the entire home. It is extremely necessary to have one available long before the actual construction process begins. Otherwise, no one would have any idea of what they were doing. Therefore, nothing would be accomplished in a systematic or in a professional way. Usually architects are hired for the specific purpose of providing a comprehensive layout of the pending home; depending upon the area, surrounding environment and location of the plot.

In the real world, there are a large variety of styles of residences; it seems that each individual prefers a different kind. However, there are a few basic plans; like the bungalow house, cottage style, southwest house, luxury house, European house, Spanish house and the traditional house.

The layout of the bungalow house has a casual look. They have low slung roofs with rafters that are exposed. Large rooms contain many big windows. The cottage house plans are derived from the Gothic heritage. They are irregular and show flexibility in the type of designing. The windows are wide with diamond or rectangular shape; doors are made in medieval style. Houses are a little bit ornamental with steep roofs that are pitched.

European style houses are built with great detailing. They are highly decorated and look like royal castles. Their interior is built mainly in stones and bricks. The Italianate house plans became popular in America during the 1860. Their exterior is well built with wooden clapboards. The traditional house plans have simple roof line and well finished exteriors. Their sides are built of bricks and stones. They offer great comfort and are not meant to be fancy. Modern designs have flat roofs and large continuous spaces with low ceilings. The contemporary house plans include glass and concrete finishes and are closely related to the international design.

Decorating With Stencils

By On March 17th, 2009

Unless you are talented enough to wisp a brush through paint and come up with a masterpiece, decorating with stencils is a great way for you to experience the satisfaction of being an artist of decorative painting.

And of course, art is all about decorating our lives. We want color and pictures everywhere we look. Otherwise our eyes would have nothing to gaze upon and our spirits would be bored.

You’ve come to the right place for great stenciling ideas and how to information. If you think that stencils are just for walls, you’ll be surprised.

You can liven up any room by decorating a piece of furniture to match the theme of the space or create one of its own. I bet you have a worn down old dresser or out of style cabinet sitting around your house or collecting dust in the attic. Can you imagine it as the new focal point in your living room? Alright, so it might take a little imagination but put your mind to it and I bet you’ll be dragging it out to the garage and slathering paint on it before you know what’s gotten into you.

Using stencils while furniture painting is a great way to decorate! Custom hand painted furniture adds an exclusive feel to any room whether it’s a formal living area or a child’s room. Stencils can be applied to parts of the furniture as an accent or spread over the whole piece to create an entire scene. Here are some ways to use stencils to decorate furniture.

Paint an image on the inside panels of cabinet doors. A single Fleur de lis works great for a traditional look. Do you have an old armoire rotting in the shed? Put a coat of fresh paint on it and decorate each door with a matching stencil design. These pieces are great storage and even better to hide the TV so don’t let old furniture go unused when you can create art with them.

Use several related stencil images to paint a still life on the top a table. Can you picture several different flower stencils bursting from the center of a table? Think of the color infusion you can work into the artwork. It would be an instant conversation piece. Be careful or everybody you know will want one.

We like to be unique. And since we were all created to be different, we should have our own style. As Clairee so eloquently put it in Steel Magnolias, “The ability to accessorize is what separates us from the animals.”

Well, anytime you pick clothing off the rack at a store notice that it is also available in four different colors and 10 different sizes. In other words about 500 other people can be wearing the same thing. What a dilemma!

Oh wait! I have a great idea. Use a stencil to personalize your clothes (well not all of them). You can paint one large image on the front and center of a t-shirt or maybe just a small design on a pocket. Decorate a pair of jeans or a jean jacket. You can paint an image on the front legs of the jeans (near the ankle or on the thigh) or just a small emblem on the back pocket.

Can you think of a better way to make team or sport shirts? If it’s for a kids group, getting them involved can be great fun not to mention a good team spirit building experience. Don’t forget that stencils are designed to replicate an exact image every time used so the shirts for your team will all be alike.

Stencils can help you create some great art for framing too! I bet you didn’t even think about that. You can customize the art in a room to really suit the decor. Choose the theme, color, size and combine stencils to make a scene! Create one art piece with a single stencil or use more to create a collection of art.

What about the walls? Using stencils to add pizazz to walls opens up so many opportunities. You can create borders up at the ceiling level or near the chair railing. Combine several designs to create a mural. Or just add one small image to add a little fun and mischief to a room (like a fairy hovering around a light switch).

As you can see, decorating with stencils is a great way to enhance the beauty of your home, your closet and yourself! I hope you enjoy the ideas and information in this article and have found some inspiration to decorate with stencils.

Interior Design – The Valentine Bedroom

By On March 14th, 2009

You’re probably tired of reading articles on how to decorate your dining room for Valentines, how to decorate your table for the perfect Valentine dinner or how to create the perfect Valentines gift.

You want to bring that special interior design into your bedroom. You want a décor to inspire your spouse, to pamper your senses and to arouse your passion. And Valentines makes your job easy, even if you don’t know it yet.

Valentines is pink, white and red.

Red is the predominant color and its meanings are not as simple as you might believe. Red is a paradox. It warns and arouses, it stands for both love and hate. In battle a red flag is a call to arms. In love red is a call… to passion. And what better day to share passionate love than Valentines? However, you should know that too much red is stressful and might provoke negative reactions. So it’s not advisable to use all-red decorations for your bedroom interior design. Not even for Valentines.

On the other hand, guys don’t like to swim in a sea of pink satin and laces. So stay away from all-pink decorations too.

The best approach is a combination of the three: white for the purity of your feelings, red for the passion of your love and pink to embody your feminine beauty.

A bed where red satin sheets contrast with a heart-shaped white pillow is really inviting and so is a bed of white satin sheets that contrast with red pillows. But when your bed is all-red don’t over-do-it by adding red lights, red candles, red curtains or red carpets to your interior design. Remember to balance the colors and the shades to create a comfortable atmosphere and not a battlefield.

Imagine the following bedroom scenery: a white satin bed, on which you sprinkled pink rose petals while the light from the red candles you placed in a few discrete spots of the room creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

You could even create your own romantic canopy: lace or a vaporous fabric hanging from the ceiling above the bed to create the cozy, luxurious feeling of a 19th century bed.

Probably the most daring and beautiful decors for a romantic bedroom are the African artifacts, rich in erotic and fertility symbols. Red, orange, yellow and other warm colors are predominant in the African art. The ebony figures add a plus of mystic and mystery to your Valentine interior design decorations.

Then don’t forget sounds and scents. Aromatherapy was hot a few years ago, but the trend comes back especially in special situations like a romantic Valentines date.

Music is the perfect relaxer. Valentines matches with romantic rock ballads, or slow motion rhythm and blues, jazz and pop ballads. Even the romantic voices of the mariachi could be the perfect choice that evening.

So no matter what interior design style you might choose for that special day, don’t over-do-it. Remember the rules of seduction: be determinate, but subtle; be passionate, but tender and love with a pure heart.

Fundamentals of Interior Design 1

By On March 10th, 2009

One of the first things that you might want to be aware of when you are broaching the subject of interior design is how complex it can be, and if we go deeper into the industry, we realise that the sheer number of permutations out there is going to be mind boggling at best, and confusing at worst. Of course, today, we are going to attempt to break through that confusing wall and reveal some of the core pillars of the interior design industry, and how, if you can, try to understand how it is working and how it will be easier for you to understand how it works in the first place. All in all, you should not be too intimidated about the topic because, when you are looking to change how your home looks like and if you do not know where to start, you would be heartened to know that at the end of the day, what you can do is just meet at a focal point of your ideas and your creativity, and from there, make certain critical decisions that would make or break your design inspiration that you might want to apply to your house.

The first thing that you should be doing is that you should be thinking of a theme for your home, and this is really based on many things. First and foremost, looking at a design that you want to have in your place and this is where the confusion starts. You need to have a focal point where your ideas can blossom, and this is normally the theme that you are going to choose. Having a theme and having an idea are two different things. A theme is already an idea that is places there – a platform in which other elements can be taken from the theme itself and used to build upon. Now, while you can combine two themes together, you need to think about the approach that you are going to take, and this can be either a balanced or a dominating approach – where one theme is going to dominate another, and this is quite useful for you as well. All in all, you need to draw inspiration from somewhere, and this is a real important part of the interior design process, and it makes your life all that much easier.

Now, this is the starting point, and there are so many other aspects that we can look at to make things easier for you, and this is where the articles are going to come into play. Remember, all you need to do is to make sure that you have a focal point where you can get your ideas from, and choosing a theme or knowing that a theme is going to play a large part in your design process means that you are on the right track, and we will be addressing other issues next.

Decorating Your Bedroom

By On March 4th, 2009

There is no doubt that the bedroom is a sanctuary to many of us. We spend roughly a third of our lives in the bedroom. We sleep there, enjoy quality family time, and relax after a hard day’s work. Therefore it is necessary to ensure that our bedrooms are comfortable at all times.

Decorating the bedroom may not as easy as it may sound. It entails more than just deciding on a bed and dressers. It requires attention to every small detail such as:

- The dimensions of your bedroom,

- Your budget,

- The size of the mattresses,

- The width of the headboard,

- And the overall style that you want to achieve.

It is also important to consider other pieces you may want to include in your bedroom such as Armoires, Nightstands, Mirrors, etc. If you are going to accentuate your bedroom with pieces such as these, it may be a good idea to purchase them as a set since each piece will compliment each other and provide a sense of consistency in your bedroom furnishings. You also may be able to save money by buying a set all at once instead of a piece at a time.

As noted above, major considerations to take into account when decorating your bedroom are the dimensions of the room, and the size of mattress. If you are decorating for a child’s or teen’s bedroom, consider a smaller mattress such as a Twin (otherwise known as a Single) which generally are 39 inches wide by 75 inches long. You may also want to consider a Double (or Full) mattress if you desire extra space. Double-sized mattresses are 54 inches wide by 75 inches long.

However, if you are looking to decorate the bedroom for an adult, you may want the extra sleeping space and decide to go with a Queen or King-sized mattress. Queens are 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. Kings are generally 72 inches by 84 inches.
When decorating the bedroom, consider the different types of beds as well:

Sleigh Beds:

- Sleigh beds are characterized by elegant, curving lines and a distinctive, romantic feel. Because the style is so eye-catching, there are some things to consider. For example, the height of a wood sleigh headboard determines how prominent the bed will be in the context of the room

Four-Poster Beds:

- Four-Poster beds are characterized by four posts at each corner; they can be of equal or varying height and can be tall or short (short being defined as the post being 3 feet high or shorter). A pencil bed is a type of four-poster, named for its tall, thin, tapered posts.

Canopy Beds:

- A Canopy bed is essentially the same as a Four-poster bed, but with a draped covering. It is a popular choice due to its elegant and warm feeling, accentuated by linens and drapes overbearing the top of the bed.

Platform Beds:

- Platform beds are very simple in form, utilizing simple lines and are usually simple, rectangular bed frames, close to the ground. They commonly use a modern or contemporary design. Since the bed is generally not as high as a standard bed, using a platform bed as the focal point will make the room appear larger and more spacious.
Panel Beds:

- Panel beds have headboards and footboards that are usually all of one piece, without spindles or slats, and are straight up and down, so that they can stand flat against the wall.

Another important aspect to consider is the material(s) of a bed. In determining the feel of your bedroom, the materials that make up your bed go a long way. For a warm and romantic feel, consider decorating your bedroom with wooden furniture with accents and intricate designs. For a simple and contemporary feel, perhaps bedroom furniture made of metals and alloys would be a good solution.

Decorating the bedroom is never an easy task. I hope this article has provided you with valuable insights which will help make decorating your bedroom a simple and fun experience.

How You Can Get The Nostalgic Look Of 1930′s Decorating In Your Home

By On March 1st, 2009

Accessories are the highlights of any interior design and could help pull your 1930′s style decorating theme together. Using nostalgic style accessories will help accentuate the nostalgic and interesting allure of your room décor, making it have the appeal of nostalgic style. Your 1930′s décor will really pop when you add specific coordinating knick-knacks, pillows and wall art.

Wall art is vital in any design, but if you don’t situate it properly it is sure to spoil the whole effect. Many people arrange paintings and prints so that the bottom or top edges line up, but it’s important to arrange them so that the middle of the pieces line up. If you have numerous piece to use on one wall, try arranging them on the floor initially to locate the perfect arrangement. You can bring interesting panache into your 1930′s style decorating theme design with 1930′s travel or movie posters that you should hang simple black frames.

Finding the appropriate knick knacks to go with your decor can be fun and also help pull the room together. To compliment your vintage decor, buy knick knacks with a nostalgic and interesting feeling. Adding art deco or art nouveau clocks, lamps and vases on shelves, mantles and tables can give you a terrific look and so can geometric shaped knick knacks on shelves. When looking for pieces try to acquire ones that mirror your unique tastes. If you have minimal funds, try shopping at garage sales and flea markets for excellent interesting decorative items.

Decorative pillows are another accessory you can make use of to spruce up your room design. If you were under the impression that pillows were purely for the bedroom, think again, they can provide a fascinating touch to any room including the dining room, kitchen, bathroom and living room. Pillows are smart for those with a budget because displaying them with your existing living room furniture can help give it a vintage decor allure without having to acquire new items. You can decorate with pillows in the bath or kitchen by putting them on chairs, shelving and any corner or any interesting spot. Putting decorative pillows stacked at the head of your bed can add a great professional appeal. Add a comfortable appeal to your decor with pillows that are made from vintage fabrics.

Some accessories that can help add interest to the feeling of nostalgic style include vintage signs, vintage linens, and jadite items. To better add appeal to your decorating theme, you should select accessories that not only go with each other, but also the decorating theme. Don’t stray to far from your theme or you could end up with a non definitive room design.

Adding art deco style furniture and accessories to your 1930′s style decorating theme will completely help the room have a unique touch. Make sure you have a plan for what styles of pieces to purchase and stick to that plan. Also, think about the sizes you are looking for that will help add to the room decor. Buying items which look great together will help ensure your design theme really pops!
